Job Description:

The Coating Manager has accountability for the safe, timely and profitable execution of divisional coating projects in his or her area of responsibility.  Thorough knowledge, understanding and experience with pricing, costs and scheduling of all Coating applications and activities is required.  The candidate will identify scope, assist with project estimating, schedule projects and select and supervise project personnel.  The candidate will then plan, coordinate, direct, control and implement these projects from start to finish according to schedule, specifications and budget, while maintaining strict adherence to A&B’s Quality Control and Safety guidelines and procedures. In conjunction with the Divisional Coating Manager and Senior Managers and applicable departments, the Coating Manager will also assist with developing the future outlook of the coating division.


  • Responsible for the efficient and profitable execution of divisional projects, including accountability for project safety, quality control, documentation, costs, revenue, scope changes, personnel and administration.
  • Supervision of the following activities:

o Surface Preparation, including sand blasting.

o Above grade applications including brush, roller, spray.

o Below grade applications including brush, roller, plural spray.

o Field joint coatings and applications brush or spray.

o Applications of following: Spray on coatings, cold applied tapes & hot tapes, petrolatum and wax brand tapes, 2&3 layer sleeves, Liquid epoxy, pre & post insulated pipe coatings and tape coatings and primers.

  • Monitor the coating activities for both employees and subcontractors on a daily basis.
  • Ensure that coating applications and activities are performed and completed as per the project specifications.
  • Ensure all reports that are required, are completed in a timely manner and filed accordingly with project specifications.
  • Report/document deficiencies on quality/inspection/safety items noted during coating operations.
  • Provide leadership that results in enhancing A&B’s safe work culture, and takes on responsibility and accountability for the safety of the staff under his/her direction.
  • Overall people leadership accountabilities for all staff reporting to the role with a strong desire to provide structured influential mentorship and ongoing personnel development.
  • Developing the future outlook of your division of responsibility and, in conjunction with applicable departments, pursuing all opportunities with securing new work.
  • Develop, establish and maintain regional and local customer clientele and contacts.
  • Identify scope of work based on bid specifications and drawings.
  • Ensures the reputation of A&B is maintained at all times by promoting respectful and courteous communication and behavior toward all clients, employees, visitors, contractors and others that may come into contact with divisional staff.

Preferred Skills:


  • NACE Level 3 Coating Inspector.
  • Minimum 5 - 8 years of experience in the Pipeline industry conducting “spray on” coating applications.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge regarding blast equipment, coating materials i.e. Denso, SPC, Canusa, ICAT FC-210, Plural pumps i.e. XP-70, safe practices, quality control and environmental concerns regarding Pipeline Coating Applications.
  • Familiar with pipeline corrosion and consequences of failure.
  • Experience with Pipeline and Facility construction, Maintenance and/or Integrity is an asset.
  • Extensive experience in a leadership/managerial role working on Coating projects is required.
  • Well versed in Quality Control requirements for Coating applications.
  • Highly self-motivated and team player.
  • Adaptable to changing conditions within the industry.
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, scheduling software and Outlook.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • All candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
